Boot win xp (32 bit) on uefi
Hello . I am a user of Easy2boot (older version). Not an expert.
Dell 3581 i3 7020u laptop - has a sata ssd (or hdd) slot and a NVME slot. Win xp installed (with help from a guy named Dietmar) on a (pristine; csm mode i think, but no specific csm mode is present in the firmware) sata hdd (of course no drivers are installed - i am ok with that). Made a image of c drive using partition saving. Re-imaged it to a partition on my efi sata ssd (5th partition i think). Refind and Grub4efi installed on the 1st ESP partition, win 10 on 2nd partition. Refind boots win 10, fatdog 812 (installed on ESP2, the 6th partition), (easy 4.3.4 Dunfell gives an error " cannot find easy.sfs"; installed on ext4 partition which is sda7 ). Grub4efi boots win 10. My questions:
- Can Grub4efi boot the winxp?
- Can Refind boot the winxp (i do not think so)?
- Can limine boot the winxp?
- Can a usb (containing/booting Grub4efi or grub4dos) boot the win xp?
- Can a win pe (or Grub2 or anything else) usb boot the win xp?
I had seen a post on another forum where a poster named milindsmart was booting various OS's on the UEFI HDD/ssd from a usb. I cannot find that thread now. Have heard of a program by Georgeking called xp2efi or something - will explore that later if the answers to above questions are negative. Thanks.
Windows XP is 20 years old. EFI was not invented then!
- Can Grub4efi boot the winxp? No - CSM/Legacy/BIOS only
- Can Refind boot the winxp (i do not think so)? No - CSM/Legacy/BIOS only

- Can a usb (containing/booting Grub4efi or grub4dos) boot the win xp? Grub4dos - yes - like Easy2Boot can!
- Can a win pe (or Grub2 or anything else) usb boot the win xp? WinPE is a Windows OS not a boot loader. Grub2 can boot XP (such as agFM in E2B)
BUT - XP does not work well if on a USB drive it is quite tricky to set up

Thanks Steve. After being unsuccessful in booting win xp (via a usb) and not wanting to waste more time, i converted my ssd to csm/bios mode (with mbr) via aomei partition assistant. I have to now boot all the OS's (win 10 x64, win xp x32, Fatdog830, ubuntu 18.04), on the ssd via a usb (i use RanishPM in the MBR of the ssd) because of lack of proper csm support in the uefi firmware.
Regarding the imaged partition of winxp on the ssd - after the re-imaging (via partition saving ), the next step is modify the registry on the imaged winxp partition . This 2nd step was not working ( might have been some mistake on my side though) . Imaged it again on the ssd after conversion to mbr mode, and the 2nd step in partition saving worked properly.
Limine is a bootloader (default of Barry Kauler's latest Easy OS). I have no intention to install winxp to a usb and boot that.
